Madame Willi Posey’s zebras and leopards place her design within the late-1960s and 1970s mainstream fashion craze for all things “African.” This trend draws on longer histories of colonialism in which African nature is seen as western property for inspiration, study, and conservation. Yet, the Harlem-based Posey worked among a globally-oriented generation of Black American designers who championed international Black freedom and equality by celebrating Africa’s unique beauty and their own connections to the continent.
DescriptionSet: Long sleeve flared tunic top with printed leopards and zebras on gold foliage ground, rounded square neckline, bust darts, zip back; Matching wide leg pants lined in muslin to the hip, fly front, belt loops
