Kerby Jean-Raymond’s spring 2016 menswear collection tells the story of Ota Benga, a Mbuti man who was kidnapped from Congo and put on display at the Bronx Zoo in 1906. Jean-Raymond stated, “We wanted to juxtapose this story with the modern-day prison system and police brutality, to show we shouldn’t be repeating these mistakes.” During the runway presentation, Jean-Raymond made an explicit connection between an African cross-diasporic history of brutality and the current Black Lives Matter movement in the United States which had little mainstream support in 2016.
