Over the last decade of the twentieth century, fashion grew more individualized, and accessories played a more important role in women’s dress. The “It” accessory phenomenon expanded to include shoes, perhaps best encapsulated by the American television series “Sex and the City.” It brought a new level of fame to shoe designers Manolo Blahnik and Christian Louboutin. Footwear, both aspirational and attainable, communicated an allegiance to a particular lifestyle.
