Gaultier first debuted skirts for men in 1984. Fashion journalist Amy Spindler marveled that despite the feminine “trappings” on his menswear, men “against all probability…still look like men.” A cultural aversion to men in skirts is perhaps mediated in this case by the use of Western stylistic details, evocative of the rugged masculinity associated with the American cowboy.
DescriptionMan's long wrap skirt in navy felted wool with pinked-edge black leather appliqué and edges; large appliqué pieces with abstract shape and white topstitched detail; CF piece extended to wrap and tie belt with extra-long braided and tasseled endsCollections
