Barbara Hulanicki founded the fabled clothing company, Biba. Pivoting away from the mod 1960s, her art nouveau and art deco-inspired creations epitomized the second wave of innovative British fashion in the post-World War II era. The penultimate Biba creation, however, was the label’s last store. While earlier retail spaces were modest, by 1973, Biba had grown into a multi-story, lifestyle emporium and was, before its untimely demise, described as the “most beautiful store in the world.” By the mid-1970s, Hulanicki left fashion and became an interior designer.
