Shoes became more elaborate as hemlines rose. Although low-heeled styles (e.g., brogues, oxfords, and spectators) were worn, the most fashionable shoes were streamlined high heels. Bright silks, suedes, and metallic leathers could match or contrast with vibrant silk or rayon stockings. Important shoe designers of the 1920s and 1930s include Herman Delman, Salvatore Ferragamo, Charles Jourdan, André Perugia, and Roger Vivier. During the Depression years (1929–1933), shoes were considered economical purchases to update a woman’s wardrobe and boost morale.
