Art and fashion journalist Charlie Porter states, “Most of the time, when we talk about the relationship between fashion and art, what we’re really talking about is two industries coming together in search of profit.” This is not always a bad thing. As Pop artist Keith Haring’s work transitioned from subway stations to exclusive art galleries, he opened his Pop Shop in 1986. He sold his art on t-shirts, stating, “The use of commercial projects has enabled me to reach millions of people whom I would not have reached by remaining an unknown artist. I assumed, after all, that the point of making art was to communicate and contribute to culture.”
