Wool broadcloth
Gift of Cora Ginsburg
Object number76.94.1
Women’s adoption of trouser styles sparked controversy, but the use of men’s styles and tailoring in women’s fashionable dress was more readily accepted. This “tailor-made” fitted suit incorporates masculine elements, yet retains the lines of the corset. By the late nineteenth century, when women were becoming more active outside the home, such styles had become fashionable.
DescriptionSuit in black wool broadcloth, trimmed with loops of black braid at collar, hem, and along princess lines; pleated fullness at sleeve caps; matching long gored skirt with braid trim, invert pleat back fullness
