The nineties witnessed many definitive handbag moments as numerous trendy styles gave new meaning to the term “arm candy.” Debuting in 1997, few handbags experienced a pop culture moment as intense as the Fendi Baguette, the first handbag to earn the moniker “It bag.” Vogue described it as the first bag that a generation of women were willing to spend more than their rent on. Soon, other handbags, such as Christian Dior’s Diorissimo saddle bag, and Louis Vuiton’s Speedy 30, designed by artist Takeshi Murakami, earned “It” status, reinforcing this cultural phenomenon.
