Courrèges’s “Lunettes Eskimo” mimic Inuit snow goggles, which have a thin slit running horizontally across the center of each lens in order to curtail snow blindness. Since Courrèges’s sunglasses were meant to evoke explorations in space, rather than the Arctic, the scholar Vanessa Brown speculates that they were “designed for protection against the metaphorically blinding light levels of the future.”
