The bustle of the late 1870s emphasized the derriere, while the tightness of the dress in front also outlined the shape of a woman’s legs. Pronounced curves, as in this gown, were aided by new techniques in corsetry that precisely molded the length of the body and made the bust more prominent.
DescriptionBlue / grey silk two-piece day dress consisting of a cuirass matelasse bodice with mandarin collar, ruched silk faille 3/4 length sleeves with matelasse / silk faille double turn back cuff and decorative silk faille half belt tied in knot at back and trimmed with silk tassels; and matching long skirt in blue / grey matelasse and silk faille, with fullness at back, ruched ruffle trimmings, silk tassel fringe trim and self pleated ruffle at hem.
