Rudi Gernreich’s designs were often controversial. When he designed this graphic ensemble in the late 1960s, pantsuits were only just becoming an acceptable style for women. Several years earlier, in 1963, Gernreich had designed a similar suit that incorporated mismatched lapels. He won the Coty American Fashion Critics’ Award that same year.
