These football knickers include built-in padding made from particle board—a precursor to modern, plastic leg pads. Heavy canvas was more resistant to dirt and wear than the lighter weight cotton that was used in earlier styles. However, canvas has now been replaced by more flexible fabrics, such as stretch polyester.
