New York Times writer Marilyn Bender observed in 1965 that James Galanos’s meticulously crafted clothes were “among the most expensive America has to offer.” A simple wool chemise retailed for $500—nearly $5,000 today. Although this cocktail dress was clearly costly, its densely embellished cuffs eliminated the need for jewelry.
