Rudi Gernreich’s design recalls a style that was fashionable during the late fifteenth century, when some sleeves were attached to a garment’s shoulder by ribbons. Wearers would then pull through swaths of their white linen undergarments through the gaps in the ribbons to create volume and contrast.
