Dolman coats were worn over the bustle-skirted silhouettes of the 1870s and 1880s. Their semi-fitted bodices typically included long, sloping shoulder seams from which square sleeves extended forward at waist level. Such sleeves hindered motion, but keeping the arms tucked close to the body could provide greater warmth.
