In 1963, Vlisco textile designer Toon van de Manakker based the “Angelina” print on the embroidered robes of elite Ethiopian Christian women. During the 1960s and 1970s, Black Americans adopted the print for dashikis – tunics inspired by West African garments that communicated solidarity with Black nationalist or countercultural political movements. Sold in many colors, “Angelina” regained popularity in West Africa, promoted by Vlisco for its 50th anniversary, and across the diaspora through its creative use in contemporary designs.
