Numerous designers experimented with repurposing materials during the 1990s, but fashion editor Suzy Menkes called Martin Margiela “fashion’s founding father of recycling.” She also observed that “this secondhand stuff [was] partly a guilt trip—fashion’s purging of the excesses of the 1980s.” The jacket featured here is remade from a theater costume, which was crafted using antique brocade of unknown origin.
