This cocoon coat was woven with roundels that loosely reference Chinese Imperial symbols. It shows the avant-garde style of the Liberty department store. The store was established in 1875 and imported “exotic” goods, such as Asian silk textiles. In 1884, Liberty began designing clothing often inspired by unrestrictive Asian dress.
