First developed in the 1940s, polyester is a manmade fiber produced from petroleum. The various processes used to create polyester, as well as other synthetics, tend to be energy-intensive, and the disposal of polyester raises concerns because it does not readily biodegrade. However, polyester is today one of the more commonly recycled fibers.
