The toga-like top of this ensemble is draped over is asymmetrically draped over one shoulder of a pink and black sheath, and then is held in place with two ties that are secured around the neck. A single piece of fabric, it was made from a pattern that is rectangular on three sides, but inwardly curved on the fourth, with two lobes and one deep dip, like one side of a violin. By the 1970s, Madame Grès had begun to blend simple, geometrically-shaped pattern pieces with arcs and curves, vibrantly exploiting her own draping vocabulary in artful and unexpected ways.
