The French art de vivre (art of living) signifies refined and disciplined taste and is popularly traced to the eighteenth century. Its image, often identified by fashion and food, has a long afterlife and has come to stand in for many contemporary ideas. Designer Vivienne Westwood uses a depiction of an eighteenth-century lady taking tea and pastries on this t-shirt to represent women intellectuals and social leaders.
