Jacquard woven wool, burgundy velvet, and tortoise shell
Gift of Maria Burgaleta-Larson

A paisley shawl large enough to cover a voluminous skirt was a fashionable accessory during the mid-nineteenth century. Over the later decades, the bustle silhouette displaced the shawl. In order not to waste such large and valuable lengths of fabric, shawls were often converted into new garments and accessories.
DescriptionDress and handbag made from paisley shawl; jacquard woven wool in shades of dark red, ochre, pink, turquoise blue, green; long coat style dress trimmed with dark red velvet bands; bustle back; large pouch bag with tortoise shell frame
