Mainbocher often accented his slim evening dresses with overskirts. This dress is an exotic variation on that theme, with fabric from multiple saris draped around the hips. Vogue noted the fashionable trend for saris when it featured this dress in a 1947 article titled "Eastern Saris in Western Ways."
