This green evening gown contains stiff buckram facing and boning throughout the bodice and down the length of the skirt. Charles James included extreme understructures in his eveningwear to ensure that the curvature and fullness of his designs would not be distorted. For him, the dress was a “cocoon in which the body is enclosed.”
