Evening dress

Pale orange crepe, purple velvet, silver metal, and rhinestones
Museum purchase

The short flutter sleeves of this dress are removable. Vogue described a similar example as “a familiar method of gaining additional service from an elaborate afternoon dress,” since the elimination of the sleeves could elevate a style to eveningwear. Bands of ruffles, flowers, or other dense trimmings cleverly disguised snap fastenings.
DescriptionPale orange crepe late day dress with armhole fringe bands of self petals and purple velvet flowers, high boat neck; bias cut; bodice shirred into inset inverted V midriff piece; snap-on short bell sleeves; floor length, slightly flared, with back pieced at knee level; LS snaps. Self tube belt with silvertone metal and rhinestone clasp.
