The militarism of Pierre Cardin’s Cossack-style raincoat is amplified by its red and black colors, which in the late 1960s were often associated with communism and anarchy. According to the New York Times, Cardin was “allegedly impressed by the slippery, long black coats worn by the riot squads” during the May, 1968, student uprisings in Paris.
