Taking its cue from Dior’s New Look silhouette, Anne Fogarty’s gold sequin, crinoline-skirted gown presents a level of extravagance common to postwar fashion. In 1959, Fogarty wrote a book called Wife Dressing, a guide for “the fine art of being a well-dressed wife,” that included “provocative notes for the patient husband who pays the bills.”
