Denim has appeared in Vivienne Westwood’s work throughout her career, from her groundbreaking boutiques to her runway collections. This particular example dates from the mid-1980s. In it, Westwood plays on the construction of a Levi’s® 507 jacket, altering the proportions in a disorienting way. It now drapes around the wearer’s body, and the patch pockets have been enlarged and moved to the wearer’s shoulders, almost like epaulets.
DescriptionWide cut jeans jacket in blue and yellow ribbed cotton denim, with yellow Velcro tabs at sleeve edges; asymmetrical rounded notch collar; small envelope pockets sewn on top of large envelope pockets with flaps extending out of shoulder seams; slanted pockets with flaps stitched open on to jacket, above pocket, at flap points; no closure
