Black painted plaster and red moiré grosgrain ribbon
Gift of Janet Chatfield-Taylor

This brooch, with its whimsical valentine motif and military styling, is the perfect example of the Bijoux de Couture. While its form recalls a traditional military medal, the use of a large, valentine-esque heart is reminiscent of the humorous buttons Elsa Schiaparelli used to inject her designs with surrealistic mirth. The materials - plaster and ribbon - are humble and unexceptional, in keeping with Schiaparelli's subversive nature. The value of the piece is determined solely through her design.
