Between 1966 and 1968, there was a trend for “paper” dresses (made from various bonded fibers) that could be worn only a few times. Many were brightly colored and featured abstracted floral, striped, spotted, and psychedelic designs, similar to those produced for fashion textiles. American graphic artist Harry Gordon exploited the flat surface and simple silhouette of the dresses to design a series of five “poster” dresses in 1968. His black-and-white screen-printed designs, taken from blown-up photographs, included the “Rose.”
