Around the turn of the century, the shape of the corset shifted from an hourglass to what is commonly referred to as the “S-curve.” Such corsets pushed a woman’s bust forward and created the effect of a monobosom. As seen in this example, the front of the bodice was a focal point for decoration, and high necklines were fashionable.
DescriptionPouch front bodice in light green cotton with white confetti print outlined with black pattern; boned standing band lace collar outlined at top with two rows of narrow black velvet ribbon; square yoke in vertical rows of lace insettion and white bands of cotton is outlined at bottom with lace ruffle and one row of ribbon; shaped slim sleeves are horizontally tucked across cap; two rows of val lace angled into point and outlined with ribbon across top of arm; wrist finished in same manner; front bodice has two rows of lace outlined with black ribbon arching from armhole toward center front waist; pouch front pleated into front waistband; back is cut with small peplum; center front hook closing. Matching flared skirt with double row of velvet ribbon on waistband; scalloped at mid calf level and edged with vallace and ribbon and attached to under flounce finished at hem with same trim; hook closing at back.
