Gift of Doris Duke

The concept of blending volume and fit is beautifully realized in this coat commissioned by socialite Doris Duke. The coat is sculpturally full in back, from shoulders to hemline, as well as throughout the entire skirt, while fit has been deftly confined to the front of the upper torso, which cleaves to the body through a judicious use of seaming. Duke's arresting figure, with its tall, angular lines, must have been set off to excellent advantage by this boldly patterned coat and its broadly sweeping silhouette.
