The accessories of the 1840s emphasized modesty and decorum. To achieve the idealized sentimental look, fashionable women adopted narrow flat shoes, tight corsets, and demure collars and undersleeves. However, these accessories were not without seductive appeal. The skill of allowing the tip of shoe to emerge from under skirts was a prized form of coquetry.
