Black velvet and ermine
Gift of Mrs. Francis Hamlin
Object number83.125.1
This evening cape of black silk velvet and ermine mimics the look of royal robes. Long before the late nineteenth century, materials like ermine fur that were once reserved for royalty became available to anyone with the money to purchase them. This robe was a symbol of the wearer’s status among the upper echelons of bourgeois society.
