James Lehrer Inc. commissioned Salvador Dalí to design ties between 1948 and 1952. An example of his original gouache designs is shown here. Printed in rayon and selling for $1.50, Dalí’s styles were the tie brand’s best seller during the early 1950s. Dalí found no conflict in designing commercial products, stating in 1952, “The modern artist … should participate in every kind of extracurricular activity. Michelangelo designed the dress for the Pope’s Swiss Guards. It is all part of the propaganda of your imagination, no?”
