Many U.S. Army and Red Cross nurses served in France during World War I, and this uniform was purchased at a French department store. The government actively recruited nurses by appealing to their patriotism. As often happens in wartime, women benefited from increased opportunity, while necessity made their contributions to the war effort invaluable.
