Navy blue matte silk jersey
Gift of Ms. Mica Ertegun
Object number88.74.1
This gown is a startling departure from Madame Grès's earlier creations, as she was slowly eliminating larger and larger sections of the bodice area. The garment's straps, essentially the bodice's support system, are formed by sections of pleated fabric that were slashed, then braided and twisted to provide both shaping and self-ornamentation. Even though the gown is quite revealing, it retains a high level of elegance in the full skirt, with extended fabric lengths that form two trains on either side.
