The eye-catching design of these jockey shorts demonstrates the influence of some of Hawes’ creative male friends. The jockey shorts were made for the writer Joseph Riznik, with whom she collaborated on writing Why Women Cry (1943). Hawes’ use of colorful knit and her nod to androgynous style also portray an affinity with the design philosophy of her friend, Rudi Gernreich.
