John Stephen designed this man’s button-down shirt using bright colors, bold patterning, and a slim fit—elements previously associated primarily with women’s wear and clothing of the gay underground. Stephen was at the forefront of the dramatic changes happening in menswear in the 1960s. By 1966, the so-called “Mod King of Carnaby Street” owned 24 boutiques in London alone.
