Fig leaf fashion has biblical origins: Adam and Eve, upon recognizing their nudity, crafted aprons from fig leaves to protect their modesty. In 1857, the Victoria and Albert Museum famously commissioned a plaster fig leaf to augment a cast of Michelangelo’s David. Fig leaves in modern and contemporary fashion are often tongue-in-cheek, questioning censorship of the human body.
