Fashion’s most dramatic silhouettes are reserved for evening dresses, many of which show the influence of historicism. The grand sweep of this dress was inspired by the pleated back panel of the eighteenth-century robe à la française, which displayed luxury textiles to full advantage. This couture fabric was woven and printed to achieve its soft, painterly effect.
