This afternoon dress would have been ideal for a spring garden party. Pleated taffeta gives it a crisp lightness, in contrast to the heaviness of the molded S-curve corset that would have been worn underneath. During the first decade of the twentieth century, it would have been one of a half dozen garments that a woman might wear in a single day, depending upon her social obligations and activities.
DescriptionBodice: pink silk taffeta with mini check and black scattered cross-hatch print; 6.2 cm band collar; shoulder yoke; pleated mono-bosom on horizontally tucked waistband; 3/4 sleeve; puffed upper 1/2 horizontal tucking, flounce; ivory lace, black faggoting trim; back hook and eye closing. Matching skirt: waistband removed; train; multi-tucked, pleated; ivory lace, black faggoting trim; ivory taffeta lining; hook closing.
