Claire McCardell’s famous “popover” debuted in 1942 “as a wartime Victory Garden cover-up,” she said, “[and] moved into the house when servantless living arrived.” In post-war suburbia, the housewife’s many domestic responsibilities required clothing that was versatile yet fashionable. By the early 1950s, the popover had “played its role as dress, coat, beach wrap or hostess dress.”
