Norell was known to begin research for a collection by combing through images of past fashions in magazines. Norell seemed to prefer the 1920s, which was perhaps not coincidentally the decade in which he began his career. In 1965, he produced designs so similar to the 1920s that fashion writer Marylin Bender asked “Is it Norell… or Vintage Chanel?”
