During the late-1980s, Paté Ouédraogo rejected the idea that European wool business suits made West African men modern. He designed chic ensembles from local cotton that fused Eurocentric and rural Ivorian styles, proving that “modernity could be local.” He soon began designing his own textiles, partnering with highly skilled local weavers and dyers. His work won admiration throughout Africa, particularly from political leaders like Nelson Mandela. Ivorian fashion scholar Joelle Firzli notes that this ensemble exemplifies the Pathé’O aesthetic: “a great and elevated West African silhouette (a modern take on the traditional West African boubou), alongside his unique color and printing experimentation and manipulation.”
