This dress from Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada’s Surrealist-inspired collection illustrates the designer’s whimsical style that made her a key artist of Spain’s Movida Madrileña from the 1980s when the country’s transition to democracy engendered a countercultural arts movement. Here, she conveys her unique perspective while referencing a host of works by Salvador Dalí. Eggs – fried, broken, and whole – appear in many Dalí works, while the baguette headpiece recalls Retrospective Bust of a Woman (1933) and the menina (princess) silhouette references The Pearl (1981), Dalí’s interpretation of Diego Velázquez’s famous Las Meninas painting (1656).
