Louis Vuitton has strong connections to the contemporary art world, creating the Fondation Louis Vuitton art museum, frequently partnering with artists, and supporting their exhibitions. Marc Jacobs, creative director from 1997 to 2013, had long admired Yayoi Kusama’s work when he debuted a collaboration featuring her signature polka dots. Simultaneously, Louis Vuitton sponsored her retrospective at the Tate Modern and featured her work in their London flagship. This partnership blended the artistic and the commercial but also drew on Kusama’s experience in fashion. She launched a short-lived, New York City-based artwear brand in 1968.
