New York- and Nassau-based artist Tavares Strachan founded the B.A.S.E.C. fashion collection with his mother, dressmaker Ella Strachan, to support design and sewing classes for women in Nassau. The bomber jackets with space mission-inspired patches reflect Tavares Strachan’s art practice, engaging science and technology and highlighting unsung heroes like Robert Henry Lawrence Jr., the first Black American astronaut. His art and design work not only creates diasporic links from the Caribbean to the United States, but also connects Black histories with Afrofuturism.
