New York-based artist Lucia Hierro redesigned the Speedfactory AM4 sneakers with plantains in homage to her Dominican roots. Plantains are native to southeast Asia and became a staple in Africa through trade and then in the Caribbean when they were imported along with enslaved captives. Their meaning to Hierro illustrates how foods can map out multicultural histories.
